I heal myself through art creation. Painting is a very routine thing for me. I don’t need to plan ahead. A creation gradually takes shape as time goes by. I thoroughly enjoy this process.

Beginning, the first large-scale work in Mei Ling WANG’s Flowery Age series.
-
I’d wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning and start painting till six in the evening for several days in a row...

This exhibition features the complete collection of Mei Ling WANG’s Flowery Age, showcasing 53 works created since 2015.
The series was inspired by the artist’s anxiety about her own fading youth and the conflicts with her mom on their notion of marriage....all of which led her to question the meaning of life and embark on a journey of awakening.

“At that time, the irreversibility of time infuriated me.” Then Mei Ling WANG saw a BTS Young Forever concert online.
I was moved by the words of the lead vocalist, who said, “For us, every stage of life has its most beautiful moment.” These words inspired me to create the Flowery Age series—I decided to empower women to affirm every stage of our lives.

Behind each painting created by Mei Ling WANG is a touching story:
The background color of Pattern is the deep blue of the ocean, while a pair of divination blocks are hidden in a sea of green floating duckweed. When both flat sides are up, it means “smile”—it alludes to how her older sister was trying to ask for divine guidance on her transnational marriage, but the gods are smiling and won’t give her an answer.
Forgiven speaks of the story of reconciliation with her mother. I want to let her know that my life is not a square she wants it to be. Taking a step back and changing perspectives, a square is turned into a diamond. Marriage is my favorite, as it illustrates my marriage with painting. It’s a wedding photo without another half.

Sense and Sensibility depicts the romantic feel of a translucent wedding dress. The blocks are the rational side; the dots are the sensual side. I combine abstractions with points, lines, and surfaces, using the simplest elements to open up the composition.
-
Each small dot in my painting symbolizes a flower petal, looking similar to the dots in Chinese characters. Echoing my cultural heritage, I use fine-tip Chinese calligraphy brushes to produce the dots. I want to embody the perseverance of women by painting many many petals every day.
-
In 2015, Mei Ling WANG began to experiment with her painting medium, switching from oil to acrylic.
These small paintings are preliminary sketches at the nascent phase of the Flowery Age series, where experimentations with the paints can be seen.

Mei Ling WANG was born in Taoyuan in 1984 and graduated with an MFA from the Academy of Art University.
Believing in “the infinite emotions of abstract expression”, she is particularly focused on the creative imagination of abstract painting.
“Art is a faith that feeds the soul.” These words from my college professor led me to the path of creation.
