    ABEI LIU

Born in Taipei in 1981, Abei LIU studied in the art track program in high school and later graduated from the Fashion Design Department of Shih Chien University. In 2011, he co-founded Elebbit Co., Ltd. with Gi Chin Cheung, and worked across design, apparel, and related creative fields. In 2014, LIU began sharing his illustrations on social media, portraying everyday people and scenes with a gentle warmth that quickly resonated with the public. This recognition led to his participation in art exhibitions, which expanded his practice and added the role of “artist” to his existing identities as designer and illustrator. Fragments Odyssey is his first solo exhibition at Eslite Gallery. Though he describes his emotions as a blend of excitement and uneasiness, LIU continues to boldly experiment with new materials and modes of expression. For the first time, he is venturing into relief sculpture, where he creates large-scale three-dimensional works from second-hand T-shirts—a seamless fusion of digital techniques and handcraft.

  • Intrusion Series

Among the 40 new works on view, the Intrusion Series incorporates photographs and postcards from the 1950s to the 1970s, sourced from flea markets in Prague. Abei LIU embroiders directly onto the images while preserving the original handwritten messages, postmarks, and other timeworn traces. He also draws inspiration from diverse found materials—such as posters from the Louvre and teddy-bear-themed game boards discovered in second-hand children’s picture books—which he transforms into new derivative works. Throughout the process, LIU not only found joy in the focus and fulfillment of embroidery, but also felt his travel memories being quietly summoned, briefly resurfacing with vivid clarity.

    About Intrusion Series

Since 2017, the Intrusion Series has been based on printed materials-such as flyers, tickets, and packaging-collected during travels or daily life, each carrying personal memories. These are reinterpreted through painting and embroidery.

With a background in fashion design, I’ve always felt at home with needlework. Beyond the visual texture of stitches, what I truly enjoy is the repetitive, meditative labor-each stitch bringing a sense of focus and quiet clarity.

As I sew into these memory-laden papers, fragments of the journeys when I received them resurface. And in the moment a piece is completed, those memories briefly return, vivid and tangible once more.

  • Re. Series

Much like the Intrusion Series, which reimagines printed materials carrying personal memories—brochures, tickets, and posters from travels and daily life—the Re. series is inspired by the Japanese tradition of repurposing kimono fabric to craft intricate decorative items, such as Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day) dolls. LIU chooses T-shirts, an object that fascinated him during his high school years, as his primary material, wrapping and layering them over a substrate to create three-dimensional works. Subcultures often communicate messages through T-shirts, as a way of signaling identity and creating a sense of belonging. Whether featuring sports imagery, cartoons, films, or bands, T-shirt graphics carry symbolic meanings that relate across generations. Via deconstruction and reconstruction, the Re. series allows the clothing materials to unfold in rich, layered forms.

Exploring the World of New Species

Every new creation is akin to the discovery of a new species-novel and unique. It is our curiosity and imagination about the unknown that fuel our creativity and vitality. In this artistic project, the “new species” emerging from the realm of imagination are given distinctive forms and personalities, reflecting our boundless reverence for nature and life. We invite viewers to engage through their own perspectives, encountering these creations that feel both familiar and strange, endearing yet mysterious, and uncovering the unpredictable beauty within.

    About Re. Series

The Re. series is a collection that utilizes second-hand clothing as its primary medium.

The meticulous craftsmanship and avant-garde production methods of that time captivated me for years. Additionally, the graphics and text on T-shirts are essential features, often imbued with memorable or simply intriguing designs that sparked my desire to recompose and create. This inspiration eventually led to the inception and exploration of the Re. series.

In 2014, Abei LIU created the character MASKBOY, who now takes center stage as the protagonist of an imagined adventure on a deserted island. Bring It On! presents a 2-meter-tall MASKBOY standing upright, a wooden stick slung over his shoulder, looking dashing and confidently confronting unknown challenges. His body is crafted mainly from grayscale fabrics, with T-shirt patterns serving as color blocks. In Mask Fam's Odyssey, MASKBOY is depicted in a fierce fight for survival, with the T-shirt patterns deconstructed and rearranged to create a visually dynamic effect. Other works in the series include Not Just Me and Wanna be my friend?. Together with the colorful Whisperocks series, these pieces introduce narrative elements that expand the imaginative space of the deserted island life. LIU hopes his creations evoke a relaxed, intuitive experience that lets each viewer interpret the island adventure in their own way.

  • About MASK FAM

The MASKBOY series began in late 2014. MASKBOY is not a specific character; to me, “he” can be any living being-he could be you, he could be me. Therefore, “his” personality evolves and becomes enriched depending on the life behind the mask.

Over the years, the MASKBOY series has continued to grow, and I aim to expand MASKBOY’s worldview through the development of the “MASK FAM” series. MASKBOY is just one member of this “MASK FAM.” The focus of the series shifts toward the diverse carriers behind the masks, much like a family of masks. This allows for a broader range of creative expressions and a greater variety of members within the family.

  • This exhibition reflects my own state of mind while creating this solo show. I allowed my thoughts to wander freely, without rushing to grasp the full picture from the beginning. Instead, each work became a guide leading to the next step. Joy and unease, doubt and affirmation intertwine, forming a process of continually moving forward into the unknown. As the works were completed one by one and the overall structure gradually emerged, I found myself becoming more grounded—and more courageous.
